Download Link

Current Version:
1.0 - 12/11/09

What it is:
This is a program I wrote to randomly generate roughly equal orders of battle for TC2M. Every OOB is uniqe and can be very different. While the data is randomly chosen, it is very historically flavored. Check the sample OOB in the next post to see what they are like.

This is just the first version, I probably will continue to improve it, especially if I get suggestions or requests.

Much of the data the generator uses is in .csv files in the Data folder, so it can be modified to your liking (if you make tweaks to these files that improve them and don't depart any more from history, I might include them in a future version).

After generating an order of battle, simply copy the .csv file from the output folder into the Open Play folder of TC2M, and you are ready to use it.

Here is a screenshot of the interface for version 1.0:

The ratio shows how different the two armies are, if they are wildly different you might want to generate another one. Of course, it doesn't give away which side has more men. This is only a ratio of MEN, it doesn't factor unit/leader quality etc.

Here is a sample OOB if you'd rather see what they're like before running the program yourself:

Garnier , thanks

Iíll give this a work out this weekend.

So - looking at the files - the player can input real names - but they might not match up completely, as in first and last names, correct?

Is there a way of adding whole names into the random equation?

Not yet, but that's possible for the future.
I just put the full list of civil war generals' first, last and middle names in, and it randomly matches a set of these for each commander. I'm working on getting a much larger set of names to use from civil war databases.

This morning I accumulated a large collection of civil war soldier names from a variety of units in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Virginia and Alabama. About 40,000 so far. Don't know if I'll be able to use them all, lol.

Also fixed the download links, had them mixed up.

I really appreciate what you have created.

I usually only play Open Play, and like to try out different OOBs. So this could be a real asset.

I prefer to play as the US, and also prefer to play at a numerical disadvantage to make it a bit more competitive against the AI.

I have generated about 30 OOB's as a trial, and all end up with a numerical advantage for the US, except for a few that are even.

Can you alter things so that the numerical advantage is random for both sides?

The way it is set up right now, both sides have an equal chance of being larger or smaller, it's completely random.

I could add options to make one side stronger, that's most definitely a good thing to have.

Right now I'm writing a little automatic updater for this to use so everyone who uses it can always have updates that I make without manually downloading.

The more interest there is the more motivated I am to continue working on it. Smile

I'm definitely interested.

I've found that if I sent Corp per Army above 3 or Divisions per Corp above 3 the game won't load.

That's odd, it works for me up to 9 Corps and 9 Divisions per army.

OK, I've finished the updater. If you download the program now (same link above) and run it, it will have an update menu option that will install the latest version if you are out of date.

Things that are new now:
1. Weapon lists for infantry and cavalry are made (before they all used springfields).
2. More than 30000 names added, so the names will be more diverse.

By the way, if you want to be sure the ratio in your battle is what the generator says, make the entire army in one corps and choose that corps as your organization, so you get the whole thing. I realized this the hard way, the total OOB was almost 1:1 ratio, but the corps I picked was 1/2 the size of the corps the enemy got.

I haven't downloaded your latest edition yet.

I don't think it was setting corp or division about 3.

Now the game won't load with any OOB generated, even if the corp and divisions are reset to default settings.

I've tried other OOB's from CMP 3 and the game loads.

Let's see what happens with your update.

I generated an OOB at default settings with your updated generator.

The game loads.

I then bumped up the corp and division numbers, and now the game doesn't load.

I reset the settings using reset to default, but the game still doesn't load.

I've generated almost 40 OOB's with your generator.

A few have been equal, but the majority have been weighted to teh US. None have been weighted to the CS.

Could you post your OOB or send it to me ( garnier @ fastmail . fm ), I can't reproduce it with my generated OOBs.

And by the game "not loading", what do you mean? Does TC2M not start at all, does it crash when you select this OOB, or does it crash when starting a scenario in TC2M?

As to the troop ratio discrepancy, make sure you have difficulty set to normal. On hard difficulty, the enemy troop numbers are inflated and the ratio you see on the generator will be wrong. (I tested this). Also note that the higher number is always shown on the left in the ratio, so you can't tell by looking at it which side has more.

E-mail on the way.

I just generated two OOB's.

The first on default settings. The game plays.

I then bumped up the number of corp, divisions and brigades to 5 and the game doesn't play.

The game crashes after I have selected the map and the OOB, and it starts to load, and then I get the message:

"War3D Real Time Game Engine by Norb Timko has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I was assuming that with US shown on the bottom left and CS on the bottom right, the ratio shown on the OOB completed tab showed the weighting for each:

113/100 = US/CS
